About Opioid Addiction
Opioids are a class of drug made from opium and though illegal versions such as heroin is included, most are prescription drugs used to treat pain. Opioid addiction often starts as treatment for short term pain, but the effects are such that an addiction is easily attained. Common opioids are oxycodone, Vicodin, Lortab, Morphine, Dilaudid, and Methadone. Opioids work by reducing the perception of pain and producing an euphoric effect. Opioid addiction can occur even for those who take an opioid for legitimate reasons. Withdrawal from opioids can result in muscle and bone pain, sever anxiety, nausea, and chills, which makes this a difficult drug to withdrawal from for many. This means in-patient treatment may be necessary even if the addiction started with a prescription.
